Reinventing Your Engagement Ring Through Remounting

Remounting your original diamond from your engagement ring is a great option available to you and an incredible way to reinvent your ring. There are a number of reasons you may want to remount your diamond ring.  Some of the more general reasons include...

  • Repair: Repair is the most common reason for remounting a diamond ring. While you may have loved and enjoyed your beautiful engagement ring setting, it can wear out over the years. And this could definitely cause problems such as a loose diamond, or worse yet, a lost diamond.
  • Merge: Perhaps you just inherited a cherished family heirloom, e.g. your mother's  or grandmother's engagement ring, and you would like to merge it with your diamond engagement ring to create a completely new and original piece of jewelry.
  • Update: Maybe you feel it's time that your diamond engagement ring gets a fresh new look!

Questions to Ask Before Getting Your Ring Remounted

So once you've decided to remount your ring, here are some questions to ask your jeweler.

  • What’s the cost?  Be sure to get a complete estimate before you start the remounting process including any charges to unset the stone from its previous mounting and any other steps that will be required for your new setting. This may seem like an obvious question, but you want to be sure you do not encounter hidden costs along the way.
  • Is remounting possible for my diamond? Some diamonds are harder to remount than others. For example, if you have a diamond in a bezel, it is more difficult to remove from this type of setting and could possibly cause damage to the stone itself. Is this something your willing to risk? Also, find out if your jeweler is comfortable remounting your diamond and their experience level with such tasks.
  • Has my diamond suffered any wear or damage from their previous settings?  Before having your cherished diamond remounted into the dazzling new setting you picked, this is the ideal time to have your diamond thoroughly examined for wear and tear. It's also the ideal time to repolish or recut it if needed!

Now that you know what to ask about remounting your diamond engagement ring, here are some of my favorite remounts. All of the rings in this collection are priced as mounting only, and do not include the center diamond.
