We perform several different types of jewelry appraisal. All appraisal work is done on-site by our owner, Bob Mullen III. The majority of our appraisals are written insurance replacement appraisals, they cost $125 per piece and include a full description of the jewelry, digital picture and diamond grading report where applicable. However, there are also two other types of appraisals we can perform, these written appraisals are useful in certain situations.
Please note, if you are looking for an "appraisal" on jewelry or diamonds you wish to sell. You can bring those items by the store anytime and we will make you an offer. There is no charge for this type of appraisal, whether or not you choose to accept our offer. For more information, please visit our We Buy Gold page.
Insurance replacement appraisals are the most common form of appraisal for our store. These appraisals are submitted to your insurance company and used to determine the premium you pay to have your jewelry insured. If the piece was recently purchased, these appraisals should almost always be within a few hundred dollars of the price you paid. If you have an appraisal that differs by thousands of dollars from the price you paid, you can bring it by the store and we would be happy to give you a verbal second opinion at no charge. Submitting an artificially high appraisal (these are often given by jewelers than run 50% off sales, 365 days a year) can cause you to pay needlessly high premiums on your insurance.
Our written insurance replacement appraisals include a full written description of the jewelry and include a digital picture. If the piece has a larger diamond, we will also include a diamond grading report, including weight, color, clarity, and cut grades. Larger diamonds will often also include a plot, detailing the internal inclusions and external blemishes in the diamond.
These appraisals, and all of our written appraisals cost $100 per hour. We can typically appraise 1 piece per hour. These appraisals are always free of charge if the piece was purchased from our store.
Another common form of appraisal is an estate appraisal. These appraisals evaluate the jewelry as it exists in its current condition. Where an insurance replacement determines how much a piece of jewelry would cost to replace with a new version, an estate appraisal determines a piece of jewelry's current worth. Technically determined as what a willing buyer will pay a willing seller, time not being of the essence. These valuations are typically approximately 75% of the insurance replacement value.
These appraisals are most commonly used by families wishing to equitably split an estate. They allow families to get a realistic value of their jewelry in its present condition. This lower valuation is also helpful with preventing being overtaxed in certain estate situations.
These appraisals include a full written description of the jewelry and include a digital picture. If the piece has a larger diamond, we will also include a diamond grading report, including weight, color, clarity, and cut grades. Larger diamonds will often also include a plot, detailing the internal inclusions and external blemishes in the diamond.
They cost $100 per hour and we can typically do 1-2 items per hour. These appraisals, like all of our appraisals are performed and written on-site by our registered jeweler, Bob Mullen Jr.
These specialized appraisals are used to determine the liquidation value of a piece of jewelry. Although, typically these appraisals are performed on large lots of jewelry. The lowest valuation of any of our appraisals, these written appraisals measure the amount a money a person could expect to receive cashing out jewelry on the spot.
These appraisals include a simple written description of the jewelry and do not include a digital picture. If the piece has a larger diamond, we will also include a diamond grading report, including weight, color, clarity, and cut grades.
They cost $100 per hour, and we can typically appraise 4-5 items per hour as they are less detailed than our other appraisals. These appraisals, like all of our appraisals are performed and written on-site by our registered jeweler, Bob Mullen Jr.
