Anniversary are that special time to celebrate your love and your history together. The tradition of celebrating anniversaries goes back a long time...
The concept of giving special gifts on wedding anniversaries is believed to have begun in Central Europe. In the medieval German culture, friends would give a wife a silver wreath when they had celebrated twenty-five years together. It is believed silver represented the harmony it took to live that many years together!
On the fiftieth anniversary, the wife was presented with a wreath of gold—we guess the gold represented the sheer grit and perseverance it took to make it to this milestone, perhaps? ;)
This custom of giving certain gifts at certain year markers starting with the Germans has been expanded through to today such as paper for the 1st year, tin/aluminum for the 10th year, china for the 20th year and so on! (These are from the traditional gift list; there is a modern one, too—check it out here! We like the modern list... see year 10!)
