Mention the wordruby and the first thing that might pop into your mind are the iconic ruby red slippers Judy Garland wore in the Wizard of Oz! Few can forget how they sparkled when she put them on!
While a number of pairs were made for the film, five pairs are known to have survived. And rubies didn't actually cover the shoes—that would have been an expensive pair of shoes—sequins were used instead, about 2300 per shoe!
Whether it's a "ruby" red pair of slippers, beautiful ruby ring, gorgeous ruby necklace, or mesmerizing ruby earrings, a ruby will get you noticed! Red is simply a captivating color, and fortunately for those born in July, this awesome stone is your birthstone!
Rubies have been a coveted gem throughout the centuries. The ancient Hindus called the ruby, King of Gems, and believed it emanated light from an internal flame; they also associated it with power, passion, and protection. Rubies are believed to bring the wearer health, wisdom, wealth and success in love.
Rubies are one of only four gems that qualify for the category of “precious gems.” The others are diamond, sapphire, and emerald. They are rated at 9 on the Mohs scale and are only second to diamonds in hardness and durability. What makes a ruby most valuable is its color: the most prized being a medium or medium-dark vivid red or slightly purplish red.
Here's a fun fact about this stone: The only difference between a ruby and a sapphire is its color! Both are corundum minerals. Light pink stones are called pink sapphires, while only the rich red gemstones are qualified to be rubies!
